Hello to all....

Spring may actually be on the horizon! The robins are returning, the sun is out........but I have learned over the last 6 years that this is Nebraska and that can change in a second!

These next few months of school will be a very busy time for all. There is preparation for graduation, show choir competitions, the school musical! Within the band department and Band Boosters, we also have many things coming up, such as Millard Solo and Ensemble, Band Fun Night, the annual Dog & Suds Car Wash, and our favorite event, the College World Series. There will be concert band contests, jazz band contests, color guard try-outs and concerts, too! Whew! So much fun!

Those who keep up with Band Booster business also know that it is time to elect officers for the coming year. This election will take place at our next booster meeting on March 17th (be sure to wear your green!). We will also be looking for people to head committees of many different types
    Spirit Wear
    Freshman Band Camp
    Varsity Band Camp
    Band Camp Celebration
just to name a few. If you are interested in holding an office or assisting with committees, let us know. We'd be happy to have you!

Now, on a personal note, I want to thank all of the people who helped 'run the show' over the last year. What would Winter Formal have been without Connie VanBlair? And how would we have managed College World Series concessions without Carla Farley and Naomi Hodgson? And, Mike Gruttemeyer, a man with a truck, a trailer and a willing heart? Teresa McAcy has done a fabulous job keeping us informed through email. Pam West has kept our nickels and dimes straight (I wonder if she could do that for me?). Our secretary, Patty Corey, has done an exceptional job of keeping meeting records - a difficult task with so many chatty people at the meetings! Mike and Sue Mohr have never failed to step in to do whatever has been asked of them - whether it has been collecting money or planning a party! Sherry Thompson could always be counted on to bring something fun and fresh to the Spirit Wear table! And so many more thank you's should be said to so many people. You know who you are, I can only hope that you know that you have been appreciated. You can see, it takes a village to keep the show on the road.

This will be my final year as a part of the Band Booster Club Executive Committee. These past four years have been educational, challenging, at times exhausting, but mostly, they have been gratifying. Getting to know the band students, parents, Bev, John, and Matt, and so many other people in the community has been a gift. Music should be a part of every child's life........and every child should have the opportunity to be a part of a wonderful music program. At Millard West, we are fortunate to have a wonderful music program - knowledgeable directors, an incredible para, Bev Welu, financial support thanks to the Millard West administration (Thanks, Dr. K!), and many talented students. The program also receives terrific support from the Band Boosters. Thank you to all boosters who have given their time and talents to support our program. If you haven't tried it, you just don't know what you've missed! I am glad that I have been allowed the opportunity to be involved, it truly has been a blessing.

I could wax poetic for many more lines, no, make that pages. But we have the year to finish, concerts to attend, and meetings to hold. Come this Monday night, 7:00 PM in the orchestra room. You'll be greeted with a smile.............and pinched if you're not wearing green!

Musically yours,
Jackie Thornhill
President

Subject: Omaha Film Festival - FEATURING DOCUMENTRY ON MARCHING BAND!!!!!!!!
Date: February 20, 2008 9:44:41 PM CST

Hello Nebraska Musicians,

A brand new award winning band and instrumental music education documentary entitled 'From the 50 Yard Line' is headed your way! The film presents the football field not only as a sports venue but also as a stage for the band. The viewer goes on a fun adventure through auditions, band camp, the marching season and national competitions. There is reality, drama, comedy, artistry, and great music, and the film is helping the general public appreciate the hard work and emotion involved in band.

Details are as follows:
Omaha Film Festival
Thursday, February 21st @ 6:00 pm
Saturday, February 23rd @ 5:00 pm
Westwood 8 Cinema - 2809 S. 125th Ave.,
Omaha, Nebraska 68144

** Nominated for BEST DOCUMENTARY **

This is a rare opportunity to get a sneak peek, before regular distribution, of a film which is becoming a darling of the Festival and music education circuits. (Awards the film has won are listed below in this email).

The high definition film depicts primarily two U.S. marching bands, including Centerville Ohio and Fairfax Los Angeles, and through them tells the universal story of students who learn and make music for others and, in doing so, also learn important life skills.

There is outstanding music from the bands in the film as well as orchestral music from Grammy nominated composer Peter Boyer, touted as the next John Williams. There is music as well from the Cirque du Soleil, cellist Marston Smith, pianist Carl Matthes, folk rocker John Jackson, Tommy the U.K. Cowboy, the Moonshine Cherrys, punk band Me First, and others.

In addition, there is also an associated internet outreach site related to the film in which over a hundred bands from all over have signed up to be counted in the credits of the film and thereby support instrumental music education. We hope the film will become a popular advocacy piece for the arts and we hope to be able to give proceeds from the project to music programs.

To keep the momentum going, we need a big crowd in Omaha. The Director will also be present for a discussion after the film, and we hope you can attend with your students. It is a fun event and we think everyone will have a good time. Thanks for your interest and have a great day. - Dave Johnson, Producer, and Doug Lantz, Director, 'From the 50 Yard Line', www.fromthe50yardline.com, www.march4music.com

Subject: REMINDER for HY-VEE RECEIPTS
Date: October 16, 2007 1:19:01 PM CDT

The Millard West Band is participating in the Cash For Students fundraiser sponsored by Hy-Vee. The program will run through December 31st. Hy-Vee will donate $1.00 for every $200 in purchases. We have the potential to make $2,000! Just have your student bring in your Hy-Vee receipts and deposit them in the collection box in the Bandroom. We can collect receipts from any of the thirteen Omaha and Council Bluffs Hy-Vees. This is a GREAT FUNDRAISER and an EASY way to make money. Let's all work to make this a great success!!!

Subject: Tail Gate Party & Senior Recognition Night
Date: October 14, 2007 8:36:38 PM CDT

October 19th is Senior Recognition Night
And the Millard West Band is throwing a PARTY. . .
A Tailgate party with the help of DOC & EDDIE'S BBQ
At Buell Stadium before the football game!

We need 100% participation of all band and color guard families to be a part of this tailgate for it to be a successful fundraiser for the band. Here's what we hope you and your student will help do:

  1. Included in the envelope are 5 meal tickets. We are asking that the students make every effort to sell these 5 tickets for $6.00 each and return the money and any unsold tickets to the band office no later than Wednesday October 17th. Any tickets that are not returned will be the financial responsibility of the student.
  2. We would like each family to donate a 12 or 24 pack of pop and/or a box of single serve variety chips. Your donation is crucial to the success of this fundraiser. Please send these donations to the band room by Wednesday, October 17th.
  3. We need parents to help the afternoon/evening of the tailgate:
    • Assist with the loading/unloading of supplies at Millard West and at Buell
    • Help with set-up at Buell
    • Take tickets and serve drinks
    • Clean up
    • Help with loading and returning unused supplies to school
  4. If we get "all hands on deck"we should be cleaned up and in the stadium before the end of the 1st Quarter.
